Its always amazing to see a new cohort of players taking part in their first rugby tournament and treading out onto the hallowed turf at Burgess Park. Year 7 & 8 pupils from secondary schools across the borough of Southwark get the opportunity to play competitive fixtures after 6 weeks of training.
St Michaels College are always on the money. Firstly they never miss a tournament. In our seven seasons I don’t think they’ve missed a single match. Huge achievement from Mr Brett-Roberts and the staff. They didn’t lose a match all last season on their way to being crowned champions and with 2 wins and a draw they have extended that record into this season.
Bacons College under the tutelage of Mr Leporte looked to be the most rugby aware of the contingent and went home unbeaten with a draw and two wins. Good numbers at training and an enthusiasm to build the school rugby provision will mean they will be in the mix at the end of the season.
Great to see ARK Allsaints back attending festivals. Hopefully they can sustain attendance as we are fully aware of the kind of quality player they can produce. We were late providing them with a coach to take sessions but now Anthony is working with them they will improve hugely.
Previous winners Sacred Heart had not yet started their coaching program when they attended the festival so it was a tough ask for them to compete with others who already had 6 sessions under their belts. Coach Jasper is now delivering weekly sessions and I would imagine they will be tough to beat when the tournaments progress from touch.
Our next tournament will be held on Wednesday 6th November where we will be selecting players for our Allstars team.
